The idea comes from saddlery and luggage. Over a plum velvet back with fine vertical channels, three cognac leather straps run from top to seat, each fastened with a brass buckle at shoulder height. The two seat cushions are loose and deep, and a pair of patterned velvet scatter cushions softens the back.
The base is where the piece turns from sofa to banquette: a band of dark brown leather, diamond-quilted and studded with brass nails along every edge, standing on short tapered legs. In the rooms shown, runs of these banquettes stand back to back with dark-topped tables and timber-framed armchairs upholstered in grey.
Construction. Hardwood and plywood frame; channelled back panel; real or faux leather straps stitched and fixed through the frame, with working buckles; quilted base panel; turned hardwood legs with floor glides.
Where it works. Hotel restaurants, private dining rooms and club-style bars where a little theatre in the detailing is welcome.
Options. Velvet and leather colours, strap count, nail finish (antique or bright brass), leg height, loose or fixed seat cushions. Foams and contract velvets specified to BS 5852 / BS 7176 on request.
